It is so often forgotten that the changes in the liturgy effect the architectural changes, which then have a lasting effect on how people experience religious worship. Architectural changes do not just happen randomly, there is always a driving force behind building walls, and in the case of St. Giles’ and St. Patrick’s it was the Protestant Reformation.The thesis brings together the physical and the societal and discusses how the changes to the architectural fabric and interior furnishings of these buildings reflects shift in a larger social mentality and experience. The Protestant Reformation did not happen overnight, nor did the changes to the fabric of St. Giles’ and St. Patrick’s. This thesis looks at how changes are made, or not made, to religious institutions to reflect a community’s religious interests. It is through looking at what was added or removed from these two churches that one can understand the shifting perceptions of what was necessary to worship God and how that effected the personal experience inside a religious building.read less
