Biomaterials have been
used for centuries but continue to be an area of active research due to the increased
sophistication in the control of properties and their use in advanced manufacturing
technologies.1,2 This dissertation focused on investigating biomaterial physical
properties (such as rheological, mechanical, and structural properties) to optimize
formulations to different end ... read moreapplications. The initial focus was on manufacturing with
silk solution and tuning the formulation for manual manufacturing of vascular grafts.
The use of additives, and different process methods for advanced manufacturing was then
explored. Both traditional direct write 3D printing and free form fabrication approaches
were investigated. Finally, building on properties and processes used in the first two
aims a level of complexity was added by incorporating mammalian cells into biomaterial
formulations to manufacture cell containing devices. In this final aim a more
generalized approach was taken using a model material and process to study how physical
forces in bioprocesses affect cells.
