The title of this project is Sawada Miki, Iconoclasm, & Children of
War: Mapping Change Through History and Translation and the purpose is also to highlight
the achievements of Sawada Miki, a social worker who created an orphanage for children
born to American soldiers and Japanese women after World War II and during the
Occupation. The children born under the circumstance of war and the ... read moreOccupation were
often abandoned, and Miki devoted herself to helping the children despite criticism from
both the Japanese public and the American occupational forces. Miki had faced many
difficulties on her path to opening the orphanage, including hate and xenophobia from
the Japanese public (many of whom believed that Miki was helping the children of the
enemy). Moreover, many Japanese people had firmly set notions of what it meant to be
Japanese, and these children, despite the Japanese blood flowing through their veins,
were seen as foreign. While others shunned the children, Miki put her efforts into
giving them a bright future.read less
