This thesis explores the subversive elements of the main characters in the Shrek series: Shrek, Fiona, the villains, and their kingdoms in light of the "classical" versions of these characters. I question the performance of gender and the morality binary in the main characters, as compared to the Disney canon. I also analyze how different production techniques, such as visual effects, editing, ... read morevoice acting, and music, combined with a satiric brand of humor, serve to highlight the performances of these characters within a conformative story arc.
