- Various communities in the Eastern Region of Ghana use combinations of improved and unimproved water sources such as small town pipe systems, boreholes, hand dug wells, surface water, and rainwater. However, there is a lack of knowledge for why there are nonfunctional improved water sources, which is a problem as they are ineffectual in serving their intended purpose of reducing the incidence and ... read moreprevalence of water-related infectious diseases. The drivers of functionality of improved water sources are dependent on numerous factors that contribute the use of certain water sources over others. In the Eastern Region of Ghana, sustainability of boreholes continues to be a problem for many. Without information concerning the prevalence of nonfunctional boreholes, it will be difficult to ascertain ways to increase the number of individuals who have access to clean water, as well as decrease exposure to water-related infectious diseases. This project means to present information on the importance of water quality of borehole water, and uses of boreholes in comparison to other water sources as determinants that contribute to borehole functionality.read less
