This thesis explores the avenues of investigation about the
representation of femininity in Vergil's Aeneid that are opened by considering the
relationship between Camilla and Atalanta, her mythic Greek antecedent. The first
chapter explores the poetics of allusion in the Aeneid as it relates to Camilla in
order to make clear the connections between her and Atalanta. The second discusses
the ... read moreways in which both Camilla's gender and the trope Vergil uses to introduce
her, the catalogue, are illusionary in order to argue that Camilla's transgressive
nature at a critical time in her life leaves her vulnerable. The final chapter
argues that this vulnerability means Camilla is doomed to die based on three
different logics as they function as technologies of gender. Camilla is doomed
from the perspective of Roman epic, from female initiation rites in society, and
from the erotics of the hunt and death in antiquity.
