First grade students participated in individual videotaped interview sessions where they engaged in drawing and constructing a solution to an engineering design problem. The results of this study suggest that planning prior to constructing an artifact is something that many first grade students can do but more research is needed to understand the characteristics and experiences of young students that differentiate their performance in planning and carrying ideas from planning to artifact construction.read less
