After the close of the Second World War, the European Continent experienced the largest demographic upheaval in modern history. This thesis investigates the economic consequences of this dramatic population change. The border regions of Czechoslovakia housed some of Central and Eastern Europe's most important industry: much of this industry was owned or operated by ethnic Germans. The industry of Czechoslovakia became increasingly important as the Cold War set in and the demands of state planners enflamed the wounds already persistent in the de-populated border regions. The combination of state planning demands and the loss of a skilled and integral minority group shaped the economic development of the border regions in socialist and post-socialist Czechoslovakia.read less
