Due to Jamie's resistance to a dictionary homework assignment, her guidance counselor assigns a project of writing her own dictionary in the hopes that it will help her explore her grief. The majority of the novella is structured as Jamie's dictionary: a heading of a particular word and how she defines it in the realm of her experience. Ultimately, Jamie will struggle to define the concepts of 'stillborn' and 'heart attack' and to address the depth of loss.read less
