In this paper, I examine how the U.S. government’s national security priorities impacted Chinese American communities during the 1940s and 50s as China transformed from wartime ally to Communist enemy. The paper is composed of three overarching segments. The first provides an overview of Chinese American history. The second is a ... read moreliterature review on existing scholarship surrounding the connection between foreign and domestic policy in the context of Chinese American experiences during the Cold War. The final section is the analysis portion, where I focus on the U.S.’ inability to distinguish between Chinese Americans and Chinese nationals, and how it serves as an example of America’s failure to live up to its founding ideals of equality.read less
