This thesis comprises an original, five-movement composition
inspired by three Colombian musical traditions. The first movement is a prelude
for guitar solo that symbolizes the arrival of the guitar in Colombia from Spain.
The middle three movements are based on the three traditions: bambuco, a dance
from the Andes region; vallenato, a Caribbean coastal music; and joropo, a
tradition from the ... read moreeastern plains. The composition is underpinned by an overview
of the Spanish-language literature documenting the evolution of the guitar in
Colombia from an instrument of the colonizers to the genesis of uniquely Colombian
musical traditions and stringed instruments. Further context is provided by an
explanation of the three musical traditions on which the composition is based. My
understanding of these traditions is drawn in part from a review of the literature
in the national libraries of Colombia, but also from in-person interviews with the
current generation of masters of these three traditions.
