The aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive analysis of the role
of stress in both the spread and progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in
men who have sex with men (MSM). As stress continues to play a prominent role in the
lives of many, its multifaceted effects are felt across the disease course of HIV. This
... read more paper analyses the role of stress in immune functioning as it relates to HIV, as well as
the ways in which stress exacerbates HIV symptoms and accelerates the progression of HIV
in MSM. MSM face unique stressors, such as minority stress and greater numbers of
adverse childhood experiences, which can increase tendencies of risk-taking behavior.
The relationship between stress and HIV is inherently cyclical in nature, as HIV
symptoms can increase levels of perceived stress. Given the complex relationship between
stress and HIV, this paper offers the use of cognitive behavioral stress management
(CBSM) as a potential intervention for HIV-positive MSM. This overarching analysis
indicates that stress plays an intimate role in the spread and progression of HIV in MSM
and ought to be an important consideration in treatment plans.read less
