Tisch Library. %R http://localhost/files/fn107978t %X In order to deal with a problem about the "Monster" simple group, Thompson developed a characterization of characters using Brauer's characterization. He did not publish this result, but versions were published by Fong [2], Smith [13], and Gluck [4] under names such as "Thompson's formulation of Brauer's Theorem". In this paper I shall show that Thompson's theorem is closely related to the analogue of the theory of Brauer characters for sets π of primes, as presented in [8] (see also Olsson [7, §6], Robinson [10], Staszewski [14], and Slattery [12]), by deducing Thompson's theorem from results about that analogue. %[ 2018-10-10 %9 Text %~ Tufts Digital Library %W Institution
