In the early twentieth century, many American elites embraced eugenics research as a way to counter the polluting effects of immigration to the United States. Research facilities sprung up around the country positing theories about racial hygiene. At the same time, Germany plunged into a depression caused by the harsh reparations it received at the close of World War II. For some Germans, eugenics became the answer for how to start anew and revitalize the country. Seeking to promote American science throughout the world, the Rockefeller Foundation began allocating grants for German eugenics research during the interwar years. What they did not know, however, was that this research would go on to support Adolf Hitler's racist aims of creating an Aryan race and destroying Europe's inferior stock in the process. %G eng %[ 2022-06-10 %9 Text %~ Tufts Digital Library %W Institution
