Drawing from memoirs, newspapers, oral histories, and autobiographies, I find that in these years leading up to the forcible accession of Hyderabad to the Indian Union in a police action, communitarian rhetoric was employed in the Indian nationalist and non-nationalist cases so as to mobilize religious communities for politically expedient ends. However, in the case of a peasant revolt in the state, the Telangana Armed Struggle, communitarianism as a phenomenon did not play a role as the movement was multi-faith in character. Furthermore, during this struggle, religious identity, particularly Muslim identity, was articulated and framed in class terms.; Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2013.; Submitted to the Dept. of History.; Advisors: Ayesha Jalal, and Kris Manjapra.; Keyword: History. %[ 2022-10-13 %9 Text %~ Tufts Digital Library %W Institution
