Nitrate in groundwater is a
substantial water-quality concern. On Cape Cod the wide-spread use of septic systems is

containing nitrate. Biological attenuation of the nitrate within permeable reactive
barriers (PRBs) containing emulsified vegetable oil (EVO) is being explored as a
possible groundwater treatment. This work uses microcosm experiments and process-based
modeling to elucidate the rates of biological denitrification enhanced using EVO under
pH conditions ranging from 4 to 8. Biomass variability in soil and pH variations were
found to affect denitrification, with limited biological treatment of nitrate observed
below pH 5.0. Results from this work suggest greater characterization of the native
biological community may improve PRB design and
operation.read less
