- This paper lays out a "co-learning" model, which aspires to cultivate long-term, placebased, reciprocal partnerships where university and community "co-produce" knowledge and action towards a more just, sustainable, and democratic society. We highlight our long-time partnership with the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative. Colearning draws upon traditions of community based and action research, service learning, university-community engagement, and universities as anchor institutions. But whereas these approaches typically focus on only one aspect of the tripartite mission of modern universities -- student learning, faculty research, or community impact, co-learning integrates teaching, research, and service into a democratic and transformative practice in a specific place. Co-learning re-envisions the role of the university in its immediate locale, as a place to recruit and educate students, create knowledge of local value (with global implications), and support local community and economic development. Co-learning partnerships can be a platform for community-engaged learning, community-based research, advancement of community strategies, and recruitment of a more diverse student body from partner communities.read less
