The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of stirring and undercooling on the phase transformation of the Iron-Cobalt alloy during its solidification process. A deeper understanding of the influence from these two factors will improve the next-generation casting techniques of the Iron-Cobalt alloy. Given the recorded high-speed video data of the containerless experiments under different ... read morestirring conditions, a computational model calculates the growth velocity and the incubation delay during the transformation from ferrite to austenite. The retain damage model predicts the change by incorporating the additional free energy introduced with the addition of undercooling and convection that are retained within the metastable solid. Linear regression analysis demonstrates the inverse correlation of both stirring induced convection and the undercooling to the delay time. Additional dimensionless analysis confirms the rationality of the model to predict the wide range of Iron-Cobalt compositions even given the difference in their thermophysical properties.
