This thesis is interested in the production of social space in Cuba and Uruguay and the guerrilla intervention into that space by Fidel Castro's rebel army in Cuba and the Tupamaros in Uruguay. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre's theory of the production of space, I trace the production of colonial capitalist space in the two countries, emphasizing the impact of sugar production in Cuba and urban development ... read morein Uruguay. I then analyze the guerrilla interventions into Cuban and Uruguayan space, engaging with the theory and practice of rural and urban guerrilla warfare (with an emphasis on the writing of Che Guevara, Regis Debray, and leading Tupamaros). Special attention is given to the possibility of producing a new kind of transformative, revolutionary "guerrilla space" that attempts to prefigure socialist space. I argue that liberated territory is key to the revolutionary process, and that spatial analysis helps us understand its importance.read less
