Each student constructs knowledge based on his or her own interpretation of an experience through his or her unique frame of reference; consequently, each student's learning outcomes are personal and varied. Given this core aspect of experiential education, assessment and evaluation of student learning within an experiential education program is challenging. I will examine the assessment of student learning at the Courageous Sailing Youth Summer Program in order to explore the role of assessment and evaluation in experiential education. First I will develop a critical framework that includes the theoretical foundations and contemporary models of experiential education; I will additionally outline assessment and evaluation structures Traditional Summative Outcomes assessment and Participatory Formative Process assessment - within the context of experiential education. Utilizing this framework, I will critically analyze my initial Traditional Summative Outcomes approach to assess student learning in the Courageous Sailing Summer Youth Program in the summer of 2012. Finally, I will propose a Participatory Formative Process evaluation strategy for Courageous that will structure and facilitate student learning and encourage the ongoing development of Courageous as an experiential education program. %[ 2022-10-07 %~ Tufts Digital Library %W Institution
