The objective of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of Nb3Sn superconductors for Mevion Medical Systems, a provider of superconducting synchrocyclotrons for proton therapy cancer treatment. Custom sample grips were designed for testing twisted 5-strand cables. The Young's modulus from loading and unloading, yield strength, and strength at fracture were calculated for different sample types. The measured properties of the strands showed good agreement with literature values for similar materials. Analytical models on the mechanics of wire ropes were used to validate the empirical values for the Young’s modulus of the cables. Characterization of the stress-strain behavior of these materials will be used to optimize the electrical and mechanical performance of magnets.read less
