This paper is a review of literature suggesting that students enter the K-12 engineering classroom with an understanding and ability to engage in the engineering design process. Inspired by the idea of prior-knowledge as a learning resource as postulated in the science literature, this paper proposes that students have acquired productive beginnings in engineering through their play activities. ... read moreDifferent types of play are identified and discussed in the context of engineering. Engineering education literature is reviewed and the desirable skills, knowledge, and dispositions of engineers are discussed and evaluated in the context of a learning model proposed by Katz. The review concludes with presentation of current literature on play and productive beginnings in engineering.
