Abstract: Central Business District (CBD) refers to an urban area where retail and office buildings are concentrated and a variety of economic and social activities take place. Place-making is an approach to city planning and design focused on enhancing the public realm in ways that improve the quality of life for all who work, live or visit a particular area. This thesis identifies economy, environment, culture and government functions as four place-making strategies and discusses how to use these place-making strategies to make a more competitive CBD. The author uses four case studies to develop an understanding of place-making strategies for CBDs. Finally, the author gives specific recommendations based on the four strategies for Beijing CBD to become more competitive.
