With the market and political imperative to develop alternative energy sources, this work advances a unique line of research into producing nano-scale catalysts to meet the clean energy demands of the future. The synthesis of several novel gold single-crystal nanostructures was completed by a variety of methods including coprecipitation with metal oxide supports, extraction of nanoparticles by ... read moreionic liquids, and deposition-precipitation. Following from recent literature, syntheses were duplicated and tuned to attain structures that are conducive to activity testing for the carbon monoxide oxidation and water-gas shift reactions. Deposition-precipitation of gold on unique zinc oxide supports including nanocrystals, nanorods, and nanowires has been studied. A determination of how initial zinc oxide structure prior to calcination affects final structure and activity has been sought. Comparisons between the resulting products in terms of particle size, particle distribution, and activity provide new relevant data and additional understanding of the gold/zinc oxide system.read less
