Abstract: Food system stakeholders in the United States are becoming more aware of the ability of agricultural practices to meet what in this paper is referred to as the triple bottom line - economic stability, ecological balance, and social justice. I conducted a review of the literature available on existing agricultural practices, and identified diversification to be an essential component of any operation that aimed to achieve the triple bottom line. I explore the specific practices of a collection of farms in Northern California and New England that are considered to be diversified, focusing on their agricultural practices, marketing strategies, and community partnerships. Lastly I analyze the implications of the finding for how the farms are balancing the triple bottom line. I conclude that diversified farming can be an economically stable model, that strives to address ecological issues, and challenges certain cultural norms surrounding American agriculture.
