The goal of this work is to further develop a sonic anemometer prototype that can operate effectively on the surface of Mars. Sonic anemometry is an alternative to other meteorological wind measurement techniques such as convective heat loss and tell-tale motion that have been used on past lander missions. Sonic anemometry has the advantages of higher resolution and faster update rates. This thesis ... read moreextends the work of Robert White et al., in which a sonic anemometer was developed and tested. We progressed the work by modifying the mechanical structure to be lighter, stiffer, and more open to reduce self-shadowing wake effects from the wind.
