Abstract: The world is increasingly facing up to the challenge of
sustainability - providing for the current generation while ensuring that future
generations' welfare is not compromised. Cities are at the forefront of the sustainability
conundrum. This paper presents a preliminary exploration into the characteristics of cities
and how they affect successful implementation of sustainable policies ... read moreand practices. The
paper consists of two sections. The first is statistical; I use multivariate ordinary least
square regression to model the relationships between the explanatory variables and the
overall sustainability of a range of 25 cities. The paper's second section presents case
studies on Warsaw and Copenhagen, cities that stand out from my statistical research as
unexpectedly sustainable given their underlying characteristics. This paper aims to provide
a greater understanding and insight for urban planners, academics and policy makers into
the determinants of sustainable cities.
