Masculinity, Femininity, & Environmental Action

Given the recent resurgence of environmentalism in response to the climate crisis, it is important to understand the gendered influences behind why individuals choose to engage in environmental action. However, rather than examine this trend only from the lens of ... read morebiological sex, my thesis applies a gendered personality traits framework in the hopes of providing a more nuanced understanding of how masculinity, femininity, and environmental action intersect. Using original data collected from an online survey, my research highlights that while both masculinity and femininity can be strong motivators for environmental action overall, feminine individuals are more likely to carry out individually focused actions while masculine individuals are more likely to engage in political actions. This finding suggests that while the mechanisms through which individuals interact with the American political system remain highly masculinized, a feminine characterization of the issue that individuals engage in can also positively influence their likelihood of participation.read less
