Today's society increasingly requires an education for employment and better income. However, gaining admission to elite universities like Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Yale is challenging for young people of color and/or modest financial means as demonstrated by admissions statistics. This thesis examines the process of achieving student body diversity at these five elite universities. I identify the barriers to achieving such diversity, uncovering and describing numerous promising strategies - inclusive mission statements, multi-lingual web sites, pipeline projects for high school students. After an analysis of the evidence gathered from the literature and a personal interview, the thesis offers a set of practical recommendations for these and other elites.; Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2015.; Submitted to the Dept. of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning.; Advisor: Lorlene Hoyt.; Committee: Caesar McDowell.; Keywords: Higher education, and Education. %[ 2022-10-13 %9 Text %~ Tufts Digital Library %W Institution
