Blended films of polycaprolactone, PCL, and poly(sulfobetaine acrylate), PSBA, were cast from 10 wt % solutions of 100/0, 99.5/0.5, 99/1, 98.5/1.5, and 0/100 PCL to PSBA in hexafluoroisopropanol, HFIP. The physical properties of the resulting films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, thermal analysis, and optical techniques. Small additions ... read moreof PSBA to the bulk PCL resulted in an increase in crystallinity within PCL observed in the DSC. There were no changes to the degradation profile of PCL with the addition of PSBA and no significant water uptake or changes to the surface hydrophilicity of the films. These findings indicate that PSBA acts as a facilitator in the crystallization of PCL within the sample.
