Taking a Trip to Engine 59.

- This children's book was created for Tufts University course CSHD90 The Exceptional Child (Fall 2018, Professor Leandra Elion) Students created books for and about children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Author's description: I wanted to show the interesting elements of a place that is in every neighborhood, and serves a vital role. I thought it would be a good idea to have ... read morethe protagonist getting a tour so it has an educational element and the reader can learn about what they may find if they too went on a tour. I think it was important to have the protagonist be a young girl because that industry is often associated with men, so I thought I would switch it up and have a female character find an interest in firefighters and that department. In addition, I wanted to make this book about a tour through the fire station because there was a lot of tactile elements that I could incorporate into the story. For example, I made a pole so that someone with visual impairments could use their sense of touch to understand the story. Clear dividers were added in order to separate each page, which makes turning the page much easier. Even with these adaptations, the story is not just limited to children with visual impairments, but instead something for every reader. I made the text minimal, and chose an easy to read font so that everyone could enjoy the story. Lastly, I incorporated an activity where the reader can look for a dog on every page at the firestation. Some dogs are easier to find than others, but nonetheless it is a fun little addition.read less
