Abstract: Shrinking cities have gained a generally negative image in the traditional media and popular consciousness, while at the same time the use of so-called Big Data for policy and planning purposes has exploded. Furthermore, it lays the groundwork for a deeper understanding of what type of subjective well-being a Twitter sentiment analysis is truly measuring, rather than relying on the assumption that happiness can be gauged with a single metric. My results demonstrate that there is some crossover between a traditional form of subjective well-being measurement and a tweet sentiment analysis. I also suggest that the traditional metric and micro-blog figures are each measuring one of the distinct forms of subjective well-being as described by the positive psychologists.
