The state of Massachusetts has one of the highest rates of opioid
fatalities in the United States. The rate of prescription opioid overdoses has
steadily increased in the state since 1999. The Massachusetts Prescription
Awareness Tool (MassPAT) tracks schedule II through schedule V prescriptions. The
goal of the MassPAT is to prevent overprescribing through this tracking mechanism.
This study ... read moreexplores physicians' perceptions of the challenges to the adoption of
the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool. It also investigates how the
adoption of the MassPAT has affected the workflow of physicians. Fifteen
interviews were conducted with general practitioners in the Greater Boston Area.
There were four findings that emerged from the interviews: 1) time with the
MassPAT is time away from patient care; 2) technological limitations make the
MassPAT inefficient; 3) individual practices have created procedures supplemental
to the MassPAT; and 4) there is inconsistent doctor endorsement of the MassPAT.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health should update the MassPAT to reflect
the feedback given by physicians about the challenges and effective aspects of the
program.
