Abstract: Kishwar Naheed's Urdu poetry addresses a number of distinctly
feminist themes, yet Naheed resists her public image as a feminist. By examining main
themes in Naheed's autobiography, such as generational violence and chauvinistic
nationalism, this thesis argues that Naheed must fictionalize a feminist self in her texts,
specifically her autobiography Buri Aurat ki Katha(A Bad Woman's ... read moreStory), to make up for her
temporal shortcomings. Her rejection of the feminist label is also a politicized decision
as Naheed positions herself outside of the feminist debate in Pakistan in order to make her
ideas relevant to many classes of women.
