The present study used dual-tasking to examine the involvement of working memory components in navigation based learning and recall processes. In the experiment, participants navigated a large-scale, desktop virtual environment while responding to one of three audio distractor tasks targeting working memory components. Converging evidence from recall tasks testing environment knowledge (landmark ... read morerecall, map drawing and pointing tasks) indicates that multiple components of working memory are involved at different capacities with navigation based learning and recall processes. Furthermore, the results indicate that multi-tasking between navigation and a task that involves verbal working memory processes leads to more significant performance decreases than completing a task involving other components of working memory.read less
