University students benefit from having access to high quality
public transportation resources, as these resources allow students to access jobs,
internships, shops and restaurants cheaply and easily. Exploring trends in
university students' transit use can help universities and transit agencies
understand reasons why students choose to use or not use transit. In this thesis,
I first examined ... read morethe literature on how environmental and demographic factors and
incentives affect transit behavior, as well as methodologies for evaluating
student transit use. I then focused on Tufts University as a case study, by
analyzing Tufts Student Annual Travel Survey from 2012 to 2018, and the 2018
automated fare collection (AFC) transit card transaction data from Tufts student
semester pass holders and all MBTA card holders. My key findings include (1) more
graduate students at Tufts University drove and used transit than undergraduate
students, (2) the share of commuters who regularly use transit is declining at
Tufts, (3) the majority of students active commuted, (4) frequent transit users
travelled near campus, along the Red Line, and commuted downtown during the day,
and (5) students who did not report using transit currently reported that they
would use the Green Line Extension. These findings will be helpful for Tufts
University to improve evaluation of past and current transit use and will offer
policy suggestions to encourage future student transit use.
