Poly(arylene-ethynylene)-alt-poly(arylene-vinylene) (PAE-PAV) oligomers were synthesized with electron withdrawing end groups in order to determine the effects on their relative fluorescence quantum yields and absorbance wavelengths. O-nitrobenzyl ester (NBEs) derivatives were studied in order to determine the effect of the electron withdrawing groups on absorbance and the rate of photocleavage. ... read moreThe PAE-PAV oligomers showed high relative fluorescence quantum yields (71%-79%). Only the nitrile octyloxy oligomer experienced any solvent effects, with a large solvochromatic shift to a lower energy emission in acetonitrile. The NBE synthesized had a peak absorbance at 356 nm, far red shifted from the standard 2-nitrobenzyl acetate. The rate of photouncaging of the NBE derivative was much slower than the standard, however, it is important to note that addition of the electron-withdrawing group did not prevent deprotection of the caged compound. The results of this study support our hypotheses; however further research is required in order to fully develop these systems.read less
