3 literature-based student assessments for general chemistry, on topics in chemical composition & reactions, gas laws, and electrochemistry. These take-home assessments were created by Professor Diren Pamuk-Turner to replace in-class exams for CHEM-11/12 General Chemistry sequence, Spring 2021.

Description ... read morefrom instructor: I have been using literature based take-home quizzes for the upper level courses at Tufts University for a long time. There are many examples of utilizing research articles in the general science curriculum, but often in the format of discussions, group projects or term-papers. However, incorporating current chemistry research into general chemistry courses in the form of assessments is less common due to the introductory nature of the classes. While creating these types of assessments are time consuming, the overarching goal of my decision was to give the participants an opportunity to delve into more complex research problems. From my previous experience in advanced courses, students were able to focus on these take-home assessments for longer stretches of time than an in-class exam would allow for. The quizzes were initially designed to complement the classical timed-exams. In these quizzes, students were permitted to complete their work by allowing the use of class notes, textbook, and even internet rather than closed-book test. Assessments included questions that required integration of the lecture material with the research applications, and therefore, differed from the straightforward exam questions. Instead of the regurgitation of the facts, answers required extensive analysis and scientific deduction, with a deep attention to the topic. Although the inspiration of this type of an assessment idea came from the advanced courses described above, complete replacement of exams with the take-home assessments in the general chemistry courses during 2020-2021 school year also proved to be successful. Here are three examples of these general chemistry assessment for common use. Idea remains the same: The assessment made use of primary research articles to deepen student thinking on the covered material. I hope to make these assessments an open source for other scholars to use or get inspired from. Keywords: Chemistry research, general chemistry, application of knowledge.read less
