Robert Bruce Shira (1910-2002) worked as dentist for the U. S. Army Dental Corps and went on to serve at e.g. Chief of Oral Surgery at the Walter Reed General Hospital, as Dental Surgeon, U. S. Army Europe (1964-1966), and retired at the Walter Reed General Hospital in 1971 as Major General and Deputy Surgeon General and Chief of the Army Dental Corps. Upon his retirement he became Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at Tufts (1972-1978), served as Senior Vice President and Provost of Tufts University, and then as Vice President for Health Sciences on the Boston Campus. He was also president of the American Dental Association. He retired from Tufts University in 1996. Throughout his career he received numerous military and dental awards and honors and helped found the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation for which he served as president.
