Biographical / Historical

The Office of Sustainability promotes environmental sustainability and guides green programming at Tufts. It is involved with campus operations and sustainability education on the Boston, Grafton, and Medford/Somerville campuses. The Office of Sustainability began as the Tufts Climate Initiative in 1999, when the University pledged to meet the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Initiative committed to four main areas: the reduction of carbon emissions at Tufts, environmental research and monitoring, climate change education, and the collaboration with other institutions to reduce carbon emissions by universities. The Tufts Climate Initiative was renamed the Office of Sustainability in 2006, at which time it also became a department under Tufts Central Administration. The Office of Sustainability identifies and implements environmental projects, and coordinates existing programs and sustainability efforts at Tufts. It is charged with advising and overseeing a number of initiatives including the Tufts Green House, the Tufts Sustainability Collective, the Eco Representatives and Eco Ambassador programs, and the Green Office Certification program. It also works with faculty to develop environmentally-related curricula, and supports the testing of faculty and student research. The Office of Sustainability ensures that the University meets its environmental commitments, including the Tufts Environmental Policy, the Kyoto Pledge, the New England Governors/Eastern Canadian Premiers Climate Change Action Plan, and the Second Nature Climate Commitment. Program director Tina Woolston took office in 2007.
