The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) was founded in 1915 by Arthur O. Lovejoy, a philosophy professor at Johns Hopkins University, and John Dewey, a professor of education and psychology at Columbia University. With the central mission of promoting academic freedom for professors and researchers, AAUP develops guidelines for workplace behavior, engages in collective bargaining through its chapters, publishes reports on the economic status of the profession, and overall advocates for those teaching and researching in institutions of higher learning.
