Biographical / Historical

The Office of Institutional Planning was founded under the direction of John (Jack) A. Dunn Jr. in 1977. Dunn began publishing the University Fact Book in 1973 while he was Special Assistant for Administration in the Office of the President. In 1977, Dunn was named the Associate Vice President of Planning and the Office of Institutional Planning assumed the responsibility of publishing the University Fact Book, under Dunn's direction. The office changed its name to the Office of Institutional Research in 1989 and began conducting admissions studies. It changed its name again to the Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation in 2006.

The Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation is responsible for providing research data and information to a variety of decision makers and departments within Tufts University. Along with preparing a range of research survey projects, outcome assessments, and program evaluations, the Office also publishes the University Fact Book and the University Dashboard. Staff members also conduct consultative work in the areas of designing surveys, crafting research proposals, and preparing evaluations.

Collection History

Processing Notes

In June-July 2014, boxes 041-072 were processed by Dan Bullman, under the supervision of Liz Francis (Records Archivist). A variety of digital media formats were present in boxes 041-072, including 3.5" floppy discs, 5.25" floppy discs, zip discs, and CDs. The content on these discs was stabilized and transferred during processing using Bagger 2.1.3. Digital media discs were removed from the collection and disposed after stabilization. Media files that were duplicated in paper (i.e. printouts of .doc files) within the collection were not stabilized, but removed and destroyed.

There is one box (UA042-073) that contains 19 unprocessed 5.25" floppy discs. While processing the collection in 2014, Dan Bullman consulted with Liz Francis and Erin Faulder (Archivist for Digital Collections) about how to handle these discs. Since DCA did not have a drive to access these discs, it was decided to leave them unprocessed for the time being.

This collection is partially processed.
