Leland Stowe was born on November 10, 1899 in Southbury, Connecticut. After graduating from Wesleyan University, he joined the New York Herald Tribune in 1922. Stowe was still a reporter for the Tribune in 1929 when he covered the Paris Reparations Conference, his coverage of the conference won him the Pulitzer Prize for foreign correspondence.
