Nearly half of the power supplied to a data center is used by the cooling system to keep all of the data processing and storage hardware functioning within operating parameters. ... read moreNew cooling technologies, such as hybrid liquid and air cooling systems could greatly reduce the energy consumed by data center cooling systems and improve data center overall efficiency. Using the laboratory setup, baseline data on air-cooling was collected to be compared with future experiments using hybrid cooling. Five Dell PowerEdge 2650 were cooled with a closed air loop, which was in turn cooled by a closed water loop. A laboratory chiller provided cold water to the water loop. Energy consumed by the servers was monitored and tracked to evaluate thermal losses in the system. Thermal losses were found to be less than approximately 15%. Additionally, an uncertainty analysis was performed on the air-cooling system. The air-cooling system was completed, and the laboratory is ready to evaluate novel cooling methods such as hybrid cooling.read less
