This trend can be seen as an effort to safeguard South Korean history, culture, and national self-identity. The stationing of U.S. military bases in South Korea, the perceived unfairness of military treaties, and the unilateral approach taken by the U.S. in dealing with North Korean- issues have all touched upon the South Korean mentality that has been self-defensive and particularly sensitive to foreign interference. Having taken root in the South Korean public in response to the 1980 Kwangju Uprising, anti-Americanism has since sprouted and has been manifested through civil society movements from the 1980s to the 2000s and is an ongoing social phenomenon that diversely affects South Korean culture, society, and polity. This thesis examines the evolution of issue-oriented anti-Americanism in South Korea and how anti-American sentiments have reflected South Koreans will for a more equal relationship with the United States in the process of finding their national self-identity.read less
