This paper investigates whether an altered design to the dictator and third party punishment games would reveal that norm enforcement is a preferable explanatory theory to other popular theories, including fairness motives and inequity aversion. We find that participants respond differently to the two conditions, but in a very specific way. This paper identifies a clear need for expanded experimental designs within simple allocation games to allow for specific comparisons between theories.read less
