- View southwest from 8 Church Street, located between Tremont Street to the southeast and Fayette Street to the northwest. Signage adorns 8 Church Street, and commercial goods are displayed in the building's windows. Construction workers stand on scaffolding used to raise the houses lining the street. On verso, Corner Fayette and Church Streets ... read more- In 1868, the grade of this section was raised, in some places up to 18 feet, until the street was brought up to the new grade, tenants on the block were obliged to enter and leave through their front doors by ladder. The McHugh store, which was cut from [an end of a block] was removed to another location. Later the May School was built on this site. The Church Street district bounded by Pleasant, Tremont and Ferdinand Streets and Columbus Avenue was originally part of the empty basin of the Charles River flats when it was filled - it had been left but slightly above tide water.
