The facades of both the Otis house and the library face south towards Cambridge Street. Shoe-shining chairs can be seen through the doorway of 83 Cambridge Street. A man reading a newspaper stands in the entrance of 81 Cambridge Street, and two small children can be seen at the northwest corner of Cambridge and Lynde Streets. Street railroad tracks run down the center of Cambridge Street. A tall wrought iron fence lines the west side of Lowell Square, to the south of the library. Large clocks adorn both the south and west elevations of the library tower.
