Abstract: Global real estate investors are increasingly looking to foreign markets in search of new opportunities. The housing market in Egypt is one of the fastest growing in the world, comparable to China or India, yet foreign investment in the sector is small. Opportunities and challenges for foreign direct investment in Egypt's housing market after the 2011 Revolution are examined with attention ... read moreto demographics, supply and demand fundaments, and public policy initiatives. Select examples illustrate tactical approaches foreign investors are pursuing in Egypt's housing sector. Compelling opportunities exist in the lower and middle-income housing markets, driven by demographics, promise of economic development and rising affluence, and improving institutional factors including the developing mortgage market. Satellite cities in Greater Cairo offer great potential for future growth and align with public policy goals. Cases suggest that forming local partnerships and having a long-term investment horizon and contrarian mindset are essential factors for success.
