Abstract: Submitted in partial fulfillment of the degree Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Abstract: Maritime security is becoming one of the top areas of concern for states in East Asia. Japan, with its large and technologically advanced navy, is in a unique position to shape the regional maritime security order. Currently, legal restraints placed on the use of force under the country's pacifist constitution limit Japan's ability to project its influence. Proposed changes to the constitution, however, may alter the situation dramatically. This paper examines the likely effects of constitutional reforms on Japan's future role in East Asian maritime security.
